Reclaiming the Woman She Set Aside
There are seasons in life when caring for others becomes so consuming that you slowly lose sight of yourself.
For Sherri Grady, that season lasted years.
As the youngest—and only daughter—among four brothers, she grew up believing education would shape her future. Her father encouraged her to pursue college, and she loved learning. But life unfolded differently. Marriage, children, and the daily responsibilities of raising a family gradually replaced the future she had once imagined.
"I began to feel that pursuing my education would be a burden to my family," she recalls.
Although she never stopped dreaming of earning an advanced degree, those dreams were repeatedly postponed. At one point, a former professor told her she had expected much more from her. The comment stung. At the time, Sherri had recently given birth to her third child and was emotionally and physically exhausted. Still, even while setting aside her own ambitions, she continued growing in quieter ways, developing the patience, empathy, resilience, and discipline that would one day become her greatest strengths.
After her divorce, Sherri returned to nursing, working overnight shifts after years away from the profession. One night, while caring for a patient with significant health challenges, she found herself exhausted, aching, and struggling to stay awake.
"I realized I couldn't sustain the physical demands of bedside nursing long-term."
That moment changed everything.
She didn't want to leave nursing. She wanted to lead within it. She realized that the future she envisioned would require the education she had postponed for so many years.
This time, she wasn't alone.
Her husband, four children, and close friends became the community that carried her forward. They checked in, encouraged her through long nights of studying, and reminded her why the sacrifices mattered. Returning to school required missed events, exhaustion, and difficult choices, but every challenge reinforced that she was investing not only in a career, but in herself.
Earning her master's degree in nursing leadership and management opened the door to a leadership role as a Legal Nurse Consultant Lead within a global risk and claims organization, where she now helps build an entirely new division.
But the most meaningful transformation wasn't listed on her résumé.
"Returning to school was not just about earning a degree—it was about reclaiming a part of myself that I had set aside."
For years, Sherri had measured success by how well she cared for everyone else. Completing her degree reminded her that her own growth mattered too.
Today, she champions others who are pursuing their education because she understands what it means to postpone a dream and what it feels like to finally reclaim it.
Her journey is a reminder that life's detours do not erase our potential. Sometimes they prepare us to become the very person we were always meant to be.
